A Bombardier CRJ-200, registered as 9N-AME and operated by Saurya Airlines, crashed moments after taking off from Kathmandu on a flight bound for Pokhara. According to preliminary reports, 18 of the 19 people on board the aircraft have died in the crash and one of the pilots was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Videos circulating online show the aircraft departing from Kathmandu’s runway 02 in a northernly direction when its right wing suddenly dropped down. The aircraft then crashed on the eastern side of the airport and the burning wreckage subsequently slid down a hill and into nearby structures.
Saurya Airlines was founded in 2017 and operated three CRJ-200 aircraft before today’s accident, which it used for domestic flights within Nepal. The CRJ was originally designed by Canadair, before Bombardier took over control of Canadair and subsequently sold the CRJ series to Mitsubishi in 2019.
