Lufthansa Group has placed an order for 22 additional long-haul airliners from both Airbus and Boeing. The order consists of an additional five Airbus A350-900s, for a total of 54 aircraft. Furthermore, it has placed an order for ten of the larger Airbus A350-1000, of which are the first of the type to be ordered by Lufthansa. Finally, an additional seven Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners are to be added to the previous order of 32. The order is worth $7.5 billion at list prices.
Lufthansa currently operates 21 Airbus A350-900s, with deliveries still in progress. The group has earmarked five of these aircraft to be delivered to Swiss from 2025. The Boeing 787-9 is the latest addition to the Lufthansa fleet, with three in service with deliveries outstanding. In addition to the A350-900, the Boeing 787-9 deliveries are destined to replace older Airbus A340-300 operated by Lufthansa and Swiss, and Boeing 767-300 and 777-200 aircraft which are operated by Austrian Airlines.
The group’s decision to add the Airbus A350-1000 are presumably set to be operated by Lufthansa itself, in order to replace its ageing fleet of Boeing 747-400 and Airbus A340-600 aircraft. Along with its commitment to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), the group says its fleet renewal accelerates its progress to meeting carbon emission goals by 2030, with today’s orders poised for delivery “from the mid-2020s onwards”.
