China Southern Airlines and Finland’s flag-carrier Finnair have announced that both airlines established a codeshare partnership, which is intended to start on June 1.

We’re very excited about this first step of our partnership with China Southern. This codeshare opens up new destinations in China for our customers on the Helsinki-Guangzhou route, which we just extended to year-round operations. China is among our top markets globally, and we are delighted to be able to offer more destinations to our customers from Guangzhou onwards.Christian Lesjak, Network and resource management at Finnair

The cooperation includes the Finnair’s route between Guangzhou and Helsinki and adds five new destinations to its network in China. In turn, China Southern’s IATA-Code ‘CZ’ will be added to Finnair flights from Helsinki to several destinations in Europe, including Amsterdam, Copenhagen, London, Paris and Stockholm.

The agreement with Finnair is the first codeshare partnership with an airline from Northern Europe for China Southern. However, the Chinese carrier has already signed codeshare agreements with multiple other European airlines. On the other hand, Finnair is well connected to the Asian market through an existing codeshare partnership with Japan Airlines. The Finnish flag-carrier itself serves around 20 destinations in Asia from its hub at Helsinki Airport, making it one of the European hubs with the most connections to Asia. Additionally, Finnair is a member of the Oneworld airline alliance, whereas China Southern Airlines decided to leave the SkyTeam alliance with effect from January 1st, 2019.
