India’s largest airline IndiGo and Airbus today announced a firm order for 500 Airbus A320neo family aircraft. The deal is the largest ever by any airline and more than doubles the airline’s existing 480 aircraft strong backlog. Deliveries will start in 2030 and will run through 2035.

Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury spoke highly of the relationship between Airbus and IndiGo and complimented the airline on its achievements, but the manufacturer has no plans to build a new A320 family aircraft assembly line in India. Christian Scherer, Airbus CCO, said he too is proud of the relationship between the two companies and how the new deal will help to expand air connectivity in India.

Pieter Elbers, IndiGo’s CEO commented how the new order speaks to the potential of the Indian market and how it is needed to serve the needs of the Indian aviation market. The new order will also help to expand the fleet even further over the next decade.
